Question:
I've recently visited some websites about "Oral Allergy Syndrome" Having
read through the content it seems to me and my 23 year old daughter that she
could possibly be suffering from this condition. She has a confirmed
allergy to pollen and is a serious vegetarian, eating raw fruit and
vegetables much of the time. Her doctor has prescribed the epi-pen which
she carries at all times. She is also keeping a record of what she eats.
Twice in the past week she has had a reaction which causes her throat to
swell, once, having eaten a banana and the other she is unsure of. How should I describe this condition on a medical allergy bracelet for this
suspected condition and are there sites that can help me produce an
emergency card for her to carry. I am also interested if there are other
members in this group who suffer with this condition who may be able to
offer further advice?
My daughter is fearful of eating anything at all and is quickly loosing her
appetite, how best can she illuminate the offending foods so that she can
work towards living her life more fully with a reasonable safe diet?
My daughter will have a long wait before she gets to see the specialist as
there is a large waiting list.
Answer:
I simply put "Allergies - see wallet card".. a wallet card comes with some
of these tags, or you can just make your own. some bracelets etc are big
enough to put more info on.. Cheaper to import them from the US these day btw + you don't have to pay a
yearly fee which you do over here last time I looked.

are just a few -they're very efficient in my experience. Get hold of The Complete Guide to Food Allergy and Intolerance, by Prof.
Brostoff and Linda Gamlin. If she can't eat bananas for instance it will
list which foods are also likely to be a problem, because in the same food
group etc. I think latex might be a problem if you have a banana allergy,
but that's just off the top of my head i could be wrong....but if that were
the case you'd want to maybe limit exposure to latex in case it causes a
reaction at some point... that kind of thing is very useful to know & that
book is a bit of a bible :o) As she is allergic to pollen, is it possible she's also allergic to ragweed?
If so, the following foods are known to cause allergic reactions:
Bananas, cantoloupes, cucumber, honeydews, watermelon, zucchini
Also the following herbs could cause a reaction:
chamomile and echinacea Just discovered this site. Diagnosed 18 years ago. Helpful info. I didn't
know the name of my allergy, but now I do - wasn't much interested in the
name, as I thought I probably was the only person in the world who
couldn't eat fruit or veggies. I ate them raw all my life! Got this when
an adulet. I have serious reactions to raw veggies and fruit. I can eat
furit and vegies if processed. PROCESSED is the magic word. I cannot
peel potatoes, carrots, eat any type of raw vegie or fruit. I refrain
from even touching raw veggies etc. BUT! I eat bagged "processed" salad
with salad dressing. I eat tomatoes on a sandwich with salad dressing
etc. I can't eat celery or a carrot with dressing....still too strong a
reaction, but it does help to be able to eat some veggies. Thought this
might help. Oh! If she accidently takes a bite of something that causes
her a reaction, have her dring a coke immediately. This "strips" the
throat.
