Question:
I am considering taking a blood test, to see what foods I am
allergic/intolerent to. I would be greatful to hear from other people,
especially those that are overweight, who have taken the test and found that
the results helped them to lose weight.
Answer:
Marion here has a lot of patients with food-allergy-related weight
problems, and an allergy-aware diet based on blood testing does often
help. BUT it isn't quite as simple as you seem to think - it isn't
always obvious how many of the test results are meaningful, or what
the appropriate substitutions are. If you are seriously overweight
you ought to get professional advice as well as a test. (This doesn't
mean a lifetime of dependence on therapists, just assistance in getting
things in proportion and dealing with what might be a large upheaval in
your lifestyle). Keeping a diet diary for a while, and maybe analyzing it for nutritional
content, is a useful complement to any tests you get done.
Blood-test do not always provide a correct answer about
food-allergies. Nor do prick-tests. The best way are oral provocation
tests. But there are few precautions that have to be taken. E.G. you
should really not eat this food for 4 or better 7 days before testing.
So did I, and I have no longer migraine.
