Question:
In the March 2002 issue of Readers Digest, a new drug for a broad
range of allergies is featured in the article - "New Choices" by Dr.
William E. Berger MD. The name of the drug is - OMALIZUMAB. Just don't
ask me how to pronounce it. But it seems that it will be available in
the next couple of years. Meantime....buy their stocks?
Answer:
it's suppose to deal with a wide range of allergies including
those related to food. The way it works - unlike many conventional
drugs which try to address allergic reactions like hives, runny nose,
itches - the objective of this new drug is to prevent any of these
common reactions from breaking out in the first place. By the way, I
picked up this news from PRWires, a news wire. Reading you reply I realized what you are talking about!! OMALIZUMAB, is
Xolair which is the antiIGE drug. They have said that this should help
with food allergies also. Altho my doctor just attended a conference and
said the outlook for this drug is not very good. I hope he will be
proved wrong, its nice to have a little hope out there. I have the March 2002 issue of Readers Digest in front of me, and can
not find the article you mentioned. Can you tell me what page the
article is on? The new drug is from Novartis / Genentech, they plan to launch under the
name Xolair (Omalizumab) maybe in 2003

I have the Genentech website bookmarked and check it from time to time.
I hope we will see it in 2003, but my personal opinion is it won't be
till 2004. I hope the original poster will tell me what page the article is on (in
readers digest),
