Question:
My dog is allergic to dairy products, lamb, and chicken.
Currently we feed him with duck and potato based food (Medical
Hypoallergenic). However, I couldn't find any treats that did not
contain lamb or chicken. Please let me know if there are any treats
specially produced for allergic dogs. Unfortunately, my veterinarian
wasn't very helpful.
Answer:
Our dogs get baby carrots. They eat Hills Z/D (thank god for that) and we
keep a small ziploc bag of the Z/D nuggets in the freezer for treats. They
absolutely love those. Of course we're careful not to let the treats exceed
10% of their daily diet. Freeze dried beef liver. My dog goes INSANE for match-head sized niblets.
They're in the pet store, usually on the top shelf of the treats aisle. Given
that you break up the 3/4" chunks into tiny chunklets, it's very economical.
If you'd prefer, you could buy beef (or even duck) livers, partially freeze,
slice thin, and whap it in the dehydrator or low oven and accomplish the same
thing. I'd keep those in the freezer and just take out a small amount at a
time to be safe, though. Along similar lines, you can find freeze dried salmon (Slammin Salmon).
Under 'Hypoallergenic Biscuits', Waggintails lists something called
Buddy Biscuits. Comes in Molasses Madness (Unbleached white flour,
rolled oats, blackstrap molasses, vegetable oil, lecithin, plus a custom
blend of natural herbs and spices), Peanut Butter Madness (Unbleached
White Flour, Peanut Butter, Vegetable Oil, Lecithin, Mixed Tocopherols)
and Veggie Madness (Barley, Spelt, Vegetable Oil, Spinach, Carrots,
Mixed Tocopherols). Natural Balance makes Potato & Duck dog treats
(Potatoes, Duck, Canola Oil, Natural Flavor, Citric Acid, Rosemary
Extract). Solid gold makes Turkey Jerky (Turkey, Poultry Meal, Turkey
Liver, Ground Brown Rice, Cracked Oats, Tapioca Meal, Unrefined Brown
Sugar, Glycerine, Blackstrap Molasses, Sea Salt, Garlic Powder, Natural
Mesquite Flavors, Cinnamon and Rosemary), but the "poultry meal" may
contain chicken, so I don't know if that'll work for you. There are a
bunch of other things that are beef based. You could always use various
types of dog foods that don't contain the ingredients he's allergic to
as treats.
